Beyond The Highland Mist - Karen Marie Moning

1997 - Adrienne de Simone is an independent modern woman who has been jaded by her last relationship.  Hurt and scared, she has vowed never to fall for a beautiful man ever again.

1513 - Sidheach James Lyon Douglas, often referred to as Hawk, is the proud Third Earl of Dalkeith.  Widely known as the most beautiful man in all of Scotland, Hawk has all the women he can handle.  He never craves for the touch of a woman against his skin, yet deep inside he secretly yearns for a wife and children that would one day grant him the happy family he has often dreamed of.

But beautiful men often find themselves in a great deal of trouble, especially when the overlooked men become jealous of the one man who has stolen away the attentions of their beloved women.  When the envious being is a disgusted fairy, the repercussions can become quite dangerous.

Personal oaths are tested when a spiteful fairy finds the perfect woman to be Hawks undoing.  Only a woman from the modern world, crushed by an unkind fate and unwilling to love or trust a beautiful man ever again, could be the one to teach Hawk a lesson about vanity.  But who will truly be the teacher, and who will be the student?

I was quite impressed with the characters in this novel, especially that of Adrienne de Simone.  A tough woman, having learned from bad experiences, swears never to let another man get too close to her heart.  Her thoughts and personality are completely believable and I am never left thinking to myself, No one would ever act like that.  I sometimes found Hawk to be a little on the dense side, its hard to believe that anyone would not pick up on the things that he misses during the spans of the storyline.

Although I am not usually a fan of a typical romance story, I highly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to any lover of historical romances.  I could not put it down and I now eagerly look forward to picking up the second story in the series and devouring it as quickly as I did this first one.  Karen Marie Moning is a very talented writer and I look forward to reading many more written by her pen.
